Filling Cupcakes

Filling cupcakes can add extra flavor and texture (in other words: extra “umpf”) to your cupcake and turn a “simple” cupcake into something special.

  • To fill cupcakes, take a wooden spoon or a dowel and insert the end into the center of the cupcake to make a hole.
  • Make the hole deep enough so that it can hold a good amount of filling, but stop right before the cupcake, to prevent the filling coming out once the wrapper is removed.
  • Remove any crumbs that may have formed on the top of the cupcake (you do not want those being spread around when you’re frosting later).
  • Fill a zip-top plastic freezer bag with filling or frosting.  You can absolutely use a piping bag, but stay away from the “thin” zip-top bags as they will tear once you apply pressure to the bag, creating a big mess.  Believe me, I speak from experience…
  • Use scissors aor kitchen shears to snip about 1/4 inch from one corner of the bag.
  • Insert the bag into the hole in the cupcake and squeeze gently until the filling comes to the top of each cupcake.
  • Once you frost the cupcake the hole will be covered and your secret is safe.
