Visiting Friends – Happy Mommy

Nicole and I met in our first year in college and became friends pretty much immediately.  We spent 4 years in college together, after which I left to go study in the U.S.  But we stayed in touch and in 2003 she was one of the bridesmaids at my wedding.  She was the only friend who came from the Netherlands to celebrate with us.  Yeah, she’s pretty awesome.

In the past 9 years, I’ve been back a couple of times and of course, each time, we spend time together and catch up.  We Skype every 2 weeks, which is awesome, but it’s not quite the same.  So…imagine my excitement when I tell you that…

…tomorrow, Nicole will be arriving for a whopping 3 week visit!  Did I say she’s awesome?  Yeah, pretty darn cool.

Last week we had our friends Simone and Babiche (Mom & Daughter) over for a visit.  They live in Spain and 7 years ago Babiche spent a summer with us to improve her English.  She spent the last year studying in Melbourne and was traveling back home via SoCal.  Her mom flew out to meet her here in Los Angeles and they spent 6 days with us, Labor Day weekend included.

Our days were filled with excursions to provide them with a (small) impression of Los Angeles.  We hit Hollywood and to balance out the craziness we spent a day at the Getty.  Lovely.

While the others explored the “grown up” art, I spent the morning with the boys exploring the kids’ activities.  We made art ourselves:

We explored the gardens

And Mommy breathed in some peace at little moments like these:

We had a picnic lunch

And we ended the day with a Frozen Yogurt treat at our favorite Menchies.

Labor Day was lovely with friends, food, tons of kids and lots of laughter, giggles, and joy.

We were able to include a beach trip on the day before our guests’ departure and running into friends was a great surprise, making Kai one happy toddler.

The days were filled with fun and flew by.  Babiche and Simone left last week, allowing us 6 days time to re-group before Nicole arrives tomorrow.  Pretty much from the time she booked it, until her arrival tomorrow, I’ve been counting down.  “Excited” is not even sufficient to describe my state of being at the moment, but I lack another overly-happy-and-excited adjective describing my current mood and happiness levels.

Many fun things have already been scheduled (Did someone say “Type A”?), others have not, but have been put on the “Would-Be-Awesome-To-Do-While-Nicole-Is-Here-List).  We’ll need her here for at least another month to make even a slight dent in that list, but oh well.  This weekend: 20th Block Partay on our Street.  Only to leave for Vegas the very next morning for 3 days.  2 Girlfriends + Vegas = FUN!!!

With all these visitors coming over, I got my tushy kicked into gear to do some massive clean up in the house.  The Garage/Office had served as the “catch all” room over the past several months.  That needed to be turned back into a room that (despite being an office) can also serve as guest room for our guests.

So, thanks to our guests I now have a nicer house too.

Well, allow me to sign off by saying I am so excited I can hardly contain myself.  I imagine this must be a similar feeling to the one my children will have when I tell them we’re going to Disneyland for their birthdays…

Until the next time,

Savor food, savor family (and friends), savor life.
